Standout Red Grass with Cool-Season Color

Why Red October Big Bluestem Grass?

By the end of fall, many gardeners are feeling the lack of color in the landscape. Luckily, there’s Red October Big Bluestem Grass to the rescue! This Bluestem variety maintains its lively red color through fall into early winter, adding variety to your home’s outdoor scenery during the colder months.

Gardeners love the Red October Big Bluestem Grass for its enticing color changes. In spring, the Bluestem develops its silvery-green grass, which changes into a bright red color in fall. In winter, it adopts a burnished crimson hue that is dramatic against the monochromatic landscape. Adding even more uniqueness, the Bluestem sprouts with characteristic “turkey foot” yellow or bronze-red flowers that attract birds and butterflies!

Wherever you plant it, this ornamental grass will be a low-maintenance, high-impact option. Plant one or more to develop a three- or four-season garden. Or, add a row of Bluestem for erosion control or privacy, as these grasses reach six feet tall at maturity. What’s more, the Bluestem thrives in pots, so you could add decorative plantings along walkways or patios.

Not only is this grass a perennial that will return year after year, it's also deer-resistant and drought-tolerant, for almost no growing effort. All you have to do to help your Bluestem thrive is ensure it’s watered during the drier months.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant your Bluestem in an area with full sun (about six hours of sunlight daily) and well-drained soil. Dig a hole that’s large enough to accommodate your plant’s root ball, place your plant, backfill the soil, and water to settle the roots.

If you choose to plant in a pot, select a container that’s about twice as large as your plant’s shipped container (and ensure it has drainage holes). Use organic soil mix, place your plant, and fill the pot with soil, leaving about two inches free at the top. Finally, water your newly-potted plant to settle the soil.

2. Watering: When the top of the soil feels dry down to about two or three inches, water your Bluestem. If your area doesn’t receive consistent rainfall, be sure to water your plant. Otherwise, Bluestem Grass requires very little additional maintenance.
