Award-Winning, Cold Hardy Korean Fire

Why Korean Fire Camellia Shrubs?

Stunning visual appeal and the ability to withstand sub-zero temperatures attributed to the Korean Fire being awarded the Gold Medal Plant Award by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

You've never seen captivating blooms like this. Bursting with bright red petals enclosed in warm gold pops of color, this japonica flower shoots out in a funnel shape at the end of thin, stable branches. Covered in dark green foliage, this shrub is a delight for the eyes. Plant in foundation plantings, flower beds, or cut a few for clippings in a short vase to admire on your kitchen table or nightstand.

It beats the cold and comes alive in spring. This foreign-born species has the genetic power to withstand extreme cold weather. So, there’s no need to worry about it being affected by a brutal ice storm. It blooms in early spring displaying the last spectacular camellia blossoms of the season.

And it's a shade gardener's dream plant. If your yard is hiding under the shadow of a dense canopy of trees, you often feel limited when it comes to color. Fortunately, Korean Fire camellias love the shade! Break out of the box and fill dark spaces with masses of color.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Like most camellias, the Korean Fire grows best in partial to full shade (3 to 6 hours of sunlight daily). Try to plant the camellia in a location that offers some protection during the cold winds of winter.

Dig a planting hole that is twice the diameter of the plant’s root ball and just as deep. Fill the hole in and tamp the soil down around the Korean Fire’s roots to remove air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil and remove any additional air pockets around its root system.

2. Watering: Keep the soil moist about 2 to 3 inches down during the first year of growth. After that, rainfall should suffice for your Korean Fire.

3. Fertilizing: Fertilize your Camellia in the spring after the flowers have dropped using a soluble fertilizer for acid-loving plants. Feed once or twice a month in spring and mid-summer.

4. Pruning: Camellias rarely require pruning. However, the plant will tolerate moderate pruning on occasion. Prune the plant after flowering in the mid-summer by removing any broken or dead branches.

Camelia

I am from South Korea. I grew up with forest of Camelia growing naturally in surrounding the city of Busan. Any part of land jutting out to sea there were forest of Camelia but what I do not like is with Japanese occupied for 36 years and everything they took and put their name on it. That makes me upset and wishes for correcting their wrong will be good. My plant is thriving and had not bloomed or want bloom yet. The way the plant shipped was good and fresh. I planted upon delivery of it. Thank you.

Korean Fire camillea review

This plant was shipped immediately. Although the shipper tried to destroy the box, the plant came in fine condition. The plant appears healthy and is quite substantial. I would order from this nursery again.
