Planting & Care

1. Planting: Emerald Green Thujas grow best in full sun, but they can withstand partial shade (afternoon sun is best in this case). And for best results, plant these trees six feet apart to enjoy their pyramid shape or four feet apart for a dense hedge.

When planting Emerald Green Thujas, dig a hole that is just as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. If the top of the root ball is lower than the surrounding soil, remove the tree and fill in part of the hole. Replace the tree and fill in the hole with the same soil you removed. You do not need to add anything to the soil. Mulch around the tree with shredded hardwood mulch. A layer three inches thick, extending three feet, around the tree is ideal.

2. Watering: Water your new tree weekly or twice weekly by holding a hose around it and counting to 20.

After the first month, water just once a week unless it is dry and hot (no rain and temperatures above 80 degrees). If it is hot and dry, water twice a week.

After the first six months, the trees will be established and subsist on rainfall alone.

3. Pruning: The Emerald Green Thuja grows well without pruning. In fact, this is one tree that needs no pruning, other than to remove dead branches. If you do decide to hedge this tree, make sure that when you trim, the bottom of the tree is wider than the top.

4. Fertilizing: Support growth by using an all-purpose evergreen tree and shrub fertilizer starting in the Spring.

Beautiful tree

So far so good. I’ve had it about 6 weeks or more now. It’s about 3' tall. I’m expecting it to take off come spring.

Emerald Green Arborvitae 10-Pack (1-2 ft.)

I ordered the Emerald Green Arborvitae 10-Pack (1-2 ft.) on December 17th, 2022, and received all 10 via FedEx on Dec 22, 2022. I was a little concerned about the browning however FGT Plant Expert Melissa did a great job at explaining how to plant and take care of them. She advised planting the Emerald Green Arborvitae 5-6 ft away from the lot line. She also stated that brown or bronze color is typical for December and that winter bronzing is completely normal due to the result of chlorophyll dying and the true color of the leaf being revealed. Melissa said this is caused by harsh sunlight, freezing ground, and wind evaporating moisture from the leaves or needles and there may be a gradation of color ranging from olive drab to bronze-purple. She stated, with winter bronzing, there will be supple branches that do not snap when bent, and many trees especially newly planted young trees, will bronze on their tops in the fall and during winter. She stated, proper watering until the first freeze can help prevent some bronzing, but if the winter is extremely harsh, it's not completely preventable, and there may be some needle and bud loss due to cold damage, but the tree will turn green with warm weather! Last, she advised fertilizing in spring to help them turn green quickly!

Extreme Green

I ordered 4 trees and they showed up in two days perfectly packaged and were a beautiful lush green. They have been planted for over a month and appear to be doing fine. Still green and no browning. Great purchase.
